02 — Zambia
A Milestone for Women’s Choice:
On 17 April 2026, the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring) officially launched in Zambia. This discreet, long-acting method empowers women with autonomy and stigma-free access.
Ambassador Programme:
In partnership with Ascend Futures Foundation, 20 young leaders were trained using the ZAZI Toolkit to lead community-driven initiatives and understand biomedical prevention tools.

In collaboration with GEM, APHA conducted an intensive skills-based training for 20 young advocates.

Zambia
A Milestone for Women’s Prevention: PrEP Ring Launch
17 April 2026 marked a major milestone in Zambia’s HIV prevention response.
The Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (PrEP Ring) is now officially available, expanding prevention choices for women and girls.
This innovative prevention method is discreet, long-acting, designed to fit into everyday life and is empowering women with privacy and autonomy. It represents more than just a product; it is a step toward dignity, informed choice and stigma-free access to care.
We recognise the leadership of the Ministry of Health Zambia and partners in introducing this additional prevention option.This milestone strengthens Zambia’s commitment to responsive, inclusive HIV prevention services.
Special recognition to Inside My Purse and the International Partnership for Microbicides (affiliate of Population Council). Their support continues to enable community awareness, demand creation and successful rollout of new prevention technologies.
This is about ensuring that every woman and girl has the power to choose the HIV prevention method that works for her.
Zambia Training (Ambassador Programme)
The Advocates for the Prevention of HIV in Africa (APHA), in partnership with Ascend Futures Foundation, recently delivered an intensive HIV Prevention Ambassador training in Zambia, bringing together 20 passionate young leaders committed to transforming their communities.
Using the ZAZI Toolkit as a foundation, the training focused on equipping participants with both the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to lead effective, community-driven HIV prevention initiatives.
Over the course of the programme, participants engaged deeply with biomedical HIV prevention tools, strengthening their understanding of options available to reduce new infections, the role of harmful social and cultural norms in driving HIV vulnerability and advocacy and community engagement strategies to reach diverse and often underserved populations. They also engaged with session design, planning and reporting, ensuring their work is structured, measurable, and impactful
The training created a dynamic space for learning, reflection, and collaboration, allowing participants to connect the science of HIV prevention with the lived realities of their communities.
By the end of the training, participants emerged as confident and capable advocates, ready to take action. They demonstrated strong, practical knowledge of HIV prevention methods, improved facilitation & communication skills and a clear commitment to reaching marginalised and underrepresented communities.
These young ambassadors are now equipped to lead conversations, challenge stigma, and expand access to HIV prevention and research within their communities.
The future is young and HIV negative.
Malawi
The Advocates for the Prevention of HIV in Africa (APHA) team recently conducted a technical support visit to Malawi, working in close collaboration with GEM to strengthen youth-led HIV prevention efforts.
Over the course of three days, 20 young advocates participated in an intensive, skills-based training designed to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to drive meaningful change in their communities.
Participants were guided through the Zazi Toolkit, a key resource for community-centered HIV prevention education, the core community engagement skills including how to lead conversations, facilitate sessions, and mobilize peers and practical approaches to delivering HIV prevention messaging in real-life settings.
The training created a space for open dialogue, peer learning, and confidence-building ensuring that participants not only understood the content but could also apply it effectively.
By the end of the training, the transformation was clear. Participants demonstrated strong understanding of HIV prevention strategies, increased confidence in engaging their communities and genuine enthusiasm to take action.
Most importantly, they left with a shared sense of purpose and readiness to return home and begin implementing HIV prevention activities that can make a real difference.
